Serko Tackles Hotel Leakage Problem with Expedia, Wotif and Booking.com Content

Auckland, 14th September 2015: Serko Ltd (SKO.NZ) – Australasia’s leader in online travel booking and expense management for business announced the release of new Serko Online functionality designed to tackle the issue of hotel leakage using newly integrated content feeds from Expedia, Wotif and Booking.com.

As much as 50% of hotel bookings ‘leak’ at time of booking (i.e. users book their flights but for whatever reason don’t book a hotel), which is a serious problem for corporates because it means corporates have to deal with unmanaged travel and Duty of Care compliance issues.

The new functionality stops users that need a hotel from completing their booking without providing a detailed reason. It also invites users trying to complete a booking without a hotel, to return to the booking workflow and search the inventory provided by Expedia, Booking.com and Wotif. This is significant as research (from Expedia) shows that:

  • 37% of travellers leave an Online Booking Tool (OBT) because they think they can get cheaper accommodation rates with leisure sites like Expedia
  • 45% of travellers have an accommodation preference that hasn’t been available through GDS inventory
  • 45% of corporate travellers are already using Expedia to book accommodation

Serko Chief Executive, Darrin Grafton, says “when users leave the OBT without booking a hotel they’re behaving rationally. They believe that they can get a better deal, or a better hotel (that’s not offered by the GDS) through their preferred leisure brand. Our solution is to bring the content that users are booking elsewhere, into the Online Booking Tool so it can be searched and booked through the managed channel which is a win for the user, the corporate and the TMC.”

He continues, “With that strategy we believe we can significantly reduce hotel leakage. This will help to reduce corporate’s compliance burden, improve travel policy compliance and ultimately drive further savings through their managed travel program.”
